Christine Beynon at premier Becoming Christine, Galway Arts Centre, 2017. Photographer Paul McCarthy.

Becoming Christine is an exhibition in partnership between Christine Beynon and Amanda Dunsmore. In 2012 visual artist Amanda Dunsmore undertook an art commission with older members of Galway County’s LGBTQ+ community. The outcome of this yearlong engagement was a sound artwork called ‘I had a dress at eleven’ and a video portrait of Senator David Norris. The legacy of Becoming Christine in combining specific artistic elements which together create an exhibition based in portraiture, is not only reflective of an individual finding themselves but is also reflective of the enormous socio-political change that has taken place in Ireland and England over the past sixty years.
